The Wagenwerkplaats was once a bustling center for the maintenance of freight cars. It was constructed in 1904 by the Holland IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij. After 2000, this site fell out of use until Siesta (Stichting Industrieel Erfgoed in de Stad Amersfoort) intervened. Their efforts led to the recognition of the site as a national monument in 2007. Today, the area is once again bustling with energy, but with a creative and cultural twist.

The Centraal Ketelhuis - NO STEAM, BUT FEASTING

The Centraal Ketelhuis is one of Amersfoort's best kept secrets. The place for an extensive high tea, delicious lunch or a cozy drink. The building dates from 1904 and is a characteristic example of industrial factory construction from the early twentieth century. It originally served as an energy supplier for the entire Wagenwerkplaats. Its huge steam boilers powered machinery and heated the workshops. Although the iconic chimney is now gone. The building still exudes a historic atmosphere.

Kei Boulderhal - From track to sport

In 1963, the expansion of the Wagenwerkplaats was completed with the construction of the New Warehouse. Now it is home to the Kei Boulderhal. This building, with its industrial look and tall windows, provides a perfect setting for bouldering enthusiasts of all levels. The short climbing routes are challenging and varied. After climbing, you can relax with a drink at the bar.

The Veerensmederij - Not just for metal workers

The Veerensmederij, once a workshop for forging springs for railroad cars, is now a theatre and home of Holland Opera. The theatre hosts special youth operas with a special blend of classical music, modern themes and visual spectacle. During the Christmas vacations, Holland Opera performs a new family opera called "Cookies. A painful story loosely based on 'Hansel and Gretel'.

The VR Room & Tasting Room - A virtual world

Next to the former train repair workshop "the carriage shed" you will find de Proefzaak. A place where you can enjoy a drink combined with a monastery beer from Kleiburgen. But there's more: the de Proefzaak also houses the VR Room, where you can step into another world with virtual reality. You always play the VR Escape rooms together. You wear your own headset and see the others walking around in the virtual world. Through the headset you can talk to your team and solve the challenges together.
