Around Spakenburg
Cycle from "Keistad" Amersfoort through Arkemheen-Eemland nature reserve to the extraordinary Bunschoten-Spakenburg. Arkemheen-Eemland is a unique and extremely open area with meadow birds in the country, grazing cows in the meadow and endless vistas.
Bunschoten-Spakenburg
Bunschoten-Spakenburg is known, among other things, for its Museum Harbor and, of course, its traditional costumes, but it also features a floodgate that, at 300 meters, is the longest self-regulating floodgate in the world. The Scheepstimmerwerf shipyard, where Botters are still built, is also definitely worth a visit. In Bunschoten, the route passes by Korenmolen de Hoop. At Brasserie de Wieken, located inside the mill, bread is served made from grains ground right there in the mill. A great option for lunch or a cup of coffee.

The historic heart of Spakenburg has been a unique picturesque core of great cultural value for centuries. The museum harbor, located on the former Zuiderzee, was once the hub of existence for Spakenburg. Every week, 200 fishing boats with fathers and sons were waved off and waited on. As you can imagine, this savage existence was anything but romantic. Fishing was one of the main sources of food and income. After closing off the Zuiderzee, 100 years ago, fishermen had to give up their heart and soul for a job on shore.
With about 40 ships in the museum harbor, the largest botter fleet in the world is still here. Meet the adjacent oldest shipyard in the Netherlands where carpentry is still done daily. Here the passion for ships is palpable. You can sail for an hour on a botter and hear the stories of the past while the skipper lets you enjoy the water.
