Discover the Soesterkwartier

Soesterkwartier was once created as a working-class neighborhood for railroad workers. With its characteristic 1930s architecture and laid-back atmosphere, the neighborhood remains attractive to families who have lived there for decades.

In the 1860s and 1870s, two railroad lines were built in Amersfoort. This created a distinct neighborhood, which was initially given the fitting name “Spoorwijk” (Railway District) . The new railroads, the station, and the adjacent wagenwerkplaats created many jobs. At the time, it was common for workers to walk to work, so a significant number of homes had to be built. This marked the beginning of a vibrant neighborhood where everyone knows each other and can be found outdoors when the weather is nice.

During the holidays, the Soesterkwartier transforms into a magical spectacle of light thanks to Soesterkwartier Verlicht's annual Route of Lights. The neighborhood is known for its exuberantly lit houses and gardens that make for an enchanting walk through the neighborhood. This cozy tradition not only brings the neighborhood together, but also attracts people from other corners of the city. The route winds through the streets with new surprises and creative decorations to discover each year.

The Soesterkwartier is full of local stores and places to eat. At Lemon & Pepper take your seat for daily snacks and baked goods. For freshly baked bread and cakes, you have to be at Patisserie van Gent, a family business that has been around for 85 years. Try their Koppelpoort cookies! From young families to elderly residents, the documentary shows the diversity and togetherness that make this neighborhood so special.
