Piet Mondriaan

Piet Mondriaan was born on Kortegracht in Amersfoort in 1872, the second of five children. He grew up in a family where creativity played an important role: his father was a drawing teacher and his uncle worked as an artist. That environment formed the basis for his love of art.
After his childhood years, Mondriaan moved to Amsterdam to study at the Rijksakademie. He began as a landscape painter, but in the following years developed into one of the most innovative artists of the 20th century. Mondriaan's quest for color and balance took him all over the world, but his story begins here in Amersfoort.
