Textile Listening Route
Note: use the map; the GPX file does not work in the downtown area.
Listen, watch and experience the historic center of Amersfoort in fabric and thread!
This interactive walking route takes you past stores and creators with a love for textiles. Along the way, the city's hidden textile history unravels. Listen to stories of shopkeepers, creators and heritage sites.
You start at the VVV and discover 9 textile locations in the city center. Starting at location B, you'll find an envelope in your bag at each stop. First listen to the audio clip, then open the envelope and answer the question. At some locations, you'll receive a fun goodie (or something else fun) to pimp your bag with.
It is possible that not all locations are open. Through audio clips, photos and reels you will still get the stories and context.

De Volmolen | Audio Tour
Plantsoen Noord 2
3811 GH AmersfoortDe Volmolen | Audio Tour
Discover the Volmolen, a unique national monument dating from 1645 and a tangible reminder of Amersfoort’s rich textile history. In this former watermill, wool was processed into cloth—an important part of the city’s centuries-long textile industry.
Its location next to de Koppelpoort makes the Volmolen particularly special. Together, these monuments tell the story of historic Amersfoort and the bustling activity that took place around the water for centuries.
From 2019 through September 2026, “ De Katoendrukkerij ” was located in the Volmolen. This gave the site’s textile heritage a new, contemporary purpose, with a focus on craftsmanship, art, education, and traditional cotton printing.
Starting October 1, 2026, the Katoendrukkerij will resume its activities, offering on-site workshops, participating in textile festivals and art fairs, and selling printing blocks and other handicrafts from India. Check the website for the program.
Please note: with the closure of De Katoendrukkerij , the Volmolen is unfortunately no longer open to the public.

Looking across the water, you now see a quiet residential neighborhood. But once this was a place full of life and activity. On Bleacher Island, canvases lay spread out in the sun, linen blew in the wind, and work was done to the rhythm of water and light.
Fabrics were woven and traded throughout the city, but before they got their value, they had to be bleached. Bleacher Island then consisted of open grassland - ideal for bleaching linen. With the clear water of the Heiligenberger Brook, the textiles were first carefully rinsed.
