Looking across the water, you now see a quiet residential neighborhood. But once this was a place full of life and activity. On Bleacher Island, canvases lay spread out in the sun, linen blew in the wind, and work was done to the rhythm of water and light.
Fabrics were woven and traded throughout the city, but before they got their value, they had to be bleached. Bleacher Island then consisted of open grassland - ideal for bleaching linen. With the clear water of the Heiligenberger Brook, the textiles were first carefully rinsed.
