Kapel Coelhorst

In the 14th century, the Chapel of Coelhorst was built on an artificial hill for the hamlet of the same name. Services were held there for the Roman Catholic community. The national monument is now used as a mausoleum for the owners of the Coelhorst estate. The surrounding cemetery is freely accessible, but the chapel is open to the public only on Open Monument Day and special occasions.

Coelhorst Castle

The earliest reference to a castle on Coelhorst Estate dates back to 1253. It was originally a fortified farmhouse on a high position surrounded by a moat. That changed in 1647, when it was rebuilt and corner towers rose at the entrance. In 1939-1940, the estate was
partially flooded, tank obstacles closed the roads to the Eem. During the May days of 1940, the castle was burned down by the Dutch army to obtain a clear field of fire.
