Casemate E13
The casemate was built in 1939-1940 as part of the reinforcement of the Valley Defense Line and is located on the section of the line dike in the municipality of Amersfoort between the pumping station at the Malesluis and the bridge over the Eem near the Bunschoterstraat. It is one of a total of 14 casemates from this period remaining on this part of the line dike.
In 1940, the Grebbelinie consisted of the Valley Line along the Valley Canal and the Eem Line along the Eem River. The military made trenches in the dike and casemates were built . No German troops appeared here in the May days of 1940. Nevertheless, as a precaution, the Dutch army destroyed 178 houses and farms in the then municipality of Hoogland, in order to obtain a clear field of fire.
