Artesian sources | Jerusalem
Along the Hooglandsedijk flows another piece of the Oude Eem. Near the small wooden bridge you can see a metal pipe from which water constantly bubbles up: an artesian spring. This phenomenon occurs because groundwater flows under pressure from the Utrechtse Heuvelrug to the Gelderse Vallei and rises to the surface here. In this area you will find both natural and artificial springs; the visible pipes mark drilled variants. Thus the connection between water, landscape and geology becomes tangible, and you discover how hidden currents under the city literally come to the surface.
