Aireys at the Hooglandsedijk | Jerusalem
Contact
On the Hooglandsedijk you see three blocks of raised Airey houses, built on a masonry plinth in the former Grebbelie dike. This kept the dike sturdy and gave residents additional living space. During construction around 1950, the Grebbelinie was still taken into account as a defensive structure, although this function lost its significance shortly thereafter. Walking further, you come to one of the greenest parts of Jerusalem. To the right is the Swamp, the former course of the Old Eem. This water is a reminder of the time when the area flooded at high tide, something that disappeared after the construction of the Afsluitdijk and the Valley Canal.
