Jonkheer Everhard Meyster discovered a 7,157-kilo boulder on the Leusderheide and bet his friends that he could round up enough people to drag the rock inside the city walls. Amid great enthusiasm and with the help of plenty of beer and fresh pretzels, 400 Amersfoort residents managed to complete the entire task. Since it was actually all a big joke on the part of the jonkheer, the city was subsequently ridiculed and mocked for it. Out of embarrassment, the “boulder pullers” buried the Amersfoortse Kei on the Varkensmarkt and didn’t dig it up again until 1903. Once the city had gotten over its embarrassment, the boulder was put on display as a symbol of their pride.
