A new Carmen is rising: that of theater-maker Giovanni Brand. In Carmen (must die), Brand, with a heavy dose of humor, guts and musical fire, fillets Bizet's Roma-hostile opera, which has been drawing packed auditoriums for a century and a half. Brand creates an entirely new theatrical performance and puts a bold dash through the cliché image of the unpredictable, fiery, lustful and dangerous people who made Bizet great.

We follow Dimitri, who is the first Roma actor to play the role of Carmen. During rehearsals, he soon discovers that he is not only performing the role of Carmen, but is himself trapped in the stereotypical image of the Roma people. In a slapstick-like tour de force of scenes, he engages in a battle that simultaneously turns the diversity discussion on its (flamenco) head and puts it on edge.
