Why we decided to get a dog is an eccentric collection of serenades to chosen family: sung odes to the friends with whom you would like to raise a dog together, for whom you would bear a child, with whom you would like to celebrate Christmas or get married platonically.
Out loud, two chosen siblings (Timo Tembuyser & Hélène Vrijdag) dream about a queer counterpart to chick-food: what does such a life look like? How do you set up a family outside the heterosexual infrastructure? And what does a love song without a romantic motif sound like?
Why we decided to get a dog is a vocal performance for two voices, two electric string instruments and two passenger elevators. Drawing from interviews with queer families and from Timo and Hélène's own friendship, they perform an experimental, critical and visual deconstruction of a serenade concert.
