Regarde Bien

Take a look in advance
While Jacques Brel was making his latest album Les Marquises on the paradise island of Hiva Oa, French Polynesia was rocked by French nuclear tests with disastrous consequences for nature and Māori communities. The iconic Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior, en route to protest at Mururoa, was blown up by French intelligence. "Regarde bien" - look closely.
In this performance, Brel's work provides a poetic access to this underexposed history. His chansons take on a poignant charge in the light of destruction and transience. Hein van der Heijden interprets multiple voices: a chemist, Brel and the original inhabitants. Music by Reza Namavar, Tahitian sounds and a magical backdrop of paper, glass and water make beauty and pain inextricably tangible.
With actor Hein van der Heijden, the nine-member Ensemble SeaSession and direction by Ola Mafaalani, a story unfolds that is as enchanting as it is disconcerting.
