Exhibition: Nationaal Monument Kamp Amersfoort

Through objects, visual material, and audio, visitors to the permanent exhibition are introduced to the biographies of ten prisoners and guards. Resistance fighter Sabine Zuur and Father Titus Brandsma are featured alongside Joseph Kotalla, who was known for his cruelty during the daily roll call. By giving a voice to both victims and perpetrators, Nationaal Monument Kamp Amersfoort highlights the complexity of World War II history.

In addition, ten different groups of prisoners are highlighted: resistance fighters, Jews, forced laborers (through the Arbeitseinsatz), “asocials” (black market traders), hostages, clergy, American citizens, Soviet prisoners of war, SS-Frontarbeiter, and two professional groups that engaged in (or attempted) coordinated resistance: doctors and police officers. The permanent exhibition emphasizes the diversity of the prisoners and the varied reasons for their imprisonment.

In the 100 (video) interviews, former prisoners share their experiences at Kamp Amersfoort. The stories of these eyewitnesses provide a powerful glimpse into camp life and bring the past to life for visitors.
