Aletta Jacobs

The life of Aletta (1854-1929) can rightly be called breathtaking. She studied medicine at a time when university was forbidden territory for women. The first female doctor in the Netherlands, she stood up for working-class women and championed contraceptives. She married a progressive politician and lost their only child in childbirth. Aletta was received into the White House as a frontwoman of the international women's movement. As if that wasn't enough, she became the driving
force behind women's suffrage in the Netherlands.
