This sculpture was made especially for the celebration of 750 years of Amersfoort and donated to the city by artist Jan Hinfelaar. Saint George and the dragon is an old legend, but well known in Amersfoort. According to this story, Saint George stood up for the people to free them from evil. Thanks to Saint George, a new era dawned, which the people could face without fear. The sculpture Sofie en de draken brings this well-known legend to this time. Sofie, symbol of 750 years of Amersfoort, fights, just like Sint Joris, for liberation and development. The sculpture refers to our time, in which a powerful, new approach is needed to contemporary threats or "dragons.

During the celebration of Amersfoort 750, the sculpture stood near the special pavilion in the Oliemolenkwartier. For a permanent location, a spot with a quiet, green background was chosen, where the silhouette of Sofie en de draken can be shown to its best advantage. The sculpture will stand as a kind of gatekeeper for the Waterwingebied.
