Waterwingebied

The Waterwingebied between Liendert and Rustenburg was originally a wet meadow area. Until 2003, drinking water was extracted here. Water was pumped up from great depths in a large number of wells and led to the pumping station on the Hogeweg.

The area was designated as a conservation zone, which meant that no construction was permitted. The site therefore became a nature and recreation area with grassy fields. Old structures, such as the boundaries of farmyards, shaped the redesign and are still recognizable today. The pollarded trees are unique and are even protected under the zoning plan. Over the years, the area has become overgrown and is now a large nature reserve where many birds and other animals. Since 2005, a flock of sheep has grazed there regularly. The natural environment has been threatened several times by development plans, but massive public opposition has consistently prevented these from moving forward.
