Randenbroek owes its name to its location on a hill at the edge of a broek (swampy area). There was already a house there in the 14th century. Both in the 17th and 19th centuries Randenbroek was extensively rebuilt. Moreover, in 1814 the garden was redesigned in English landscape style. The house also included a coach house, an orangery and a dovecote. The gate on Bisschopsweg used to stand on Utrechtsestraat. It had been erected there in 1835 when the city gate was demolished.

The most famous occupant of Randenbroek was painter and architect Jacob van Campen, the architect of the Palace on Dam Square. He inherited the house with lands in 1626 and died there in 1657. Van Campen started a painting school in the house. One of his pupils was Matthias Withoos.
