Hitchcock knew exactly how to play the audience and in fact created the blueprint of suspense film. In France, the Nouvelle Vague movement emerged. Cinemas tried to lure viewers with 3D films, cinemascope, feel-o-rama and smell-o-rama. The 1960s are known for the rise of youth culture (think Beatles), the sexual revolution and flower power ("make love not war").
The 1950s and 1960s also see a cross-pollination between Europe and Hollywood. Think spaghetti westerns like Once Upon a Time in the West. Moreover, Fellini's Italian film La Dolce Vita shows how frenzied the star-adoration was at that time.
