Take a look in advance

A fresh, open and curious look at film. That is what film journalist and course instructor Kevin Toma (de Volkskrant) always enthusiastically conveys to his audience. With Same is Not the Same, he presents his latest and most adventurous course to date.

In this first session, Kevin Toma explains what he means by comparative film viewing and how this approach can sharpen your perspective on film. Take, for example, two different scenes involving a gangster stealing a car, or three variations on a romantic kiss: each film will handle that situation just a little differently, which becomes all the more apparent when you view such scenes back-to-back or even side by side. It can be just as enlightening to place films alongside their remakes, homages, or parodies, or to examine alternative versions of the same scene. The wonder of comparison—that’s what this first session is all about.
