How can we "hear" black holes?

The lecture will be at Het Groene Huis in Amersfoort and is organized by Sterrenwacht Midden-Nederland.

The speaker says the following about his lecture:
Until 2015, we had never directly observed a black hole. On Sept. 14 of that year, we managed to "hear" two colliding black holes for the first time, through gravitational waves. This was the fiercest event in the universe observed up to that time, and at the same time one of the weakest signals. To capture the minimal signal on Earth, engineers and scientists had to build the most accurate measuring instrument ever.

In this lecture, I will discuss how we can detect gravitational waves and what this teaches us about black holes and neutron stars, and where these sources come from. We will look at the 90 or so detections done with the current detectors LIGO, Virgo and KAGRA, as well as future detectors such as Einstein Telescope (which may be built in the Netherlands), and the space mission LISA, which will be able to detect gravitational waves at much lower frequencies and thus very different sources, such as double white dwarfs and supermassive black holes.
