On World Suicide Prevention Day, Thursday, September 10, 2026, Herstelnetwerk Eemland is organizing the “Walk into the Light” in Amersfoort and Baarn. The walk brings together residents, loved ones, professionals, policymakers, and anyone who feels connected to the cause to reflect on mental health, hope, and suicide prevention.
Every year, more than 1,800 people in the Netherlands die by suicide. Currently, it is the leading cause of death among young adults under 30. Every month, we lose a schoolclass’s worth of young people. Behind these numbers lie thousands of personal stories of people who are struggling, as well as of loved ones who are affected. With “Walk into the Light,” Herstelnetwerk Eemland aims to contribute to greater openness. By walking together, we show that no one has to face this alone and that talking about mental health challenges can change lives.

We’ll walk together at first light to reflect on suicidal thoughts and suicide prevention. Everyone is welcome: those with personal experience, family members, friends, professionals, and residents who want to show their support. During the walk, there will be opportunities to connect, find common ground, have conversations, and find hope.
We walk for everyone who is struggling, for everyone who has lost someone, for everyone who feels connected to this cause, and for everyone who wants to show that there is always room for hope.
This walk is not a competitive event. It is a moment of connection. A place where you are welcome, whether you come to be quiet, share a story, remember someone, or simply to look ahead together.
By walking together, we break the silence surrounding mental vulnerability and suicidal thoughts. We’re showing that no one has to carry the burden alone. The Eemland Recovery Network believes that recovery begins with being seen and heard. It’s precisely by being visible together that we make it clear that mental vulnerability is a part of life and that support from others can make a huge difference.
Everyone is welcome. No experience is necessary, but a willingness to get involved is. Will you walk with us? Together, we’ll take steps toward greater openness, greater understanding, and greater hope. Because no matter how dark it may sometimes be, together we’ll walk into the light.
We’ll wrap up with a group breakfast. Where the walk ends, the conversation continues.
