Eleanor (June Squibb) has been sharing an apartment with her best friend Bess for many years. Together they live the "Golden Girl lifestyle" in Florida, are each other's support and companion, and provide commentary on daily life. When Bess dies suddenly, the deeply sad Eleanor is forced to move in with her daughter in New York. In an effort to find companionship for Eleanor, her daughter takes her to the local, Jewish community center. There she accidentally ends up at a support group for Holocaust survivors. Eleanor does not belong to this group. But instead of leaving, Eleanor shares the story of Bess, who was indeed a Holocaust survivor, as if it were her own.

Journalism student Nina observes the chat group that day for a school assignment. Impressed by Eleanor's story, she asks her if she can write a piece about her. A close bond develops between Eleanor and Nina who are both looking to connect. But how long before that bond is broken by the truth?
