Furcy Madeleine (1786–1856) was an enslaved man from the island of Bourbon (now Réunion) who became famous for his exceptionally long and courageous legal battle for his freedom. In 1817, he discovered that his mother, Madeleine, had been freed even before his birth—which meant that, legally speaking, he should have been born a free man. Yet he was kept as a slave. Determined to claim his right to freedom, he took his case to court with the support of an abolitionist prosecutor.
He filed a lawsuit against his owner, Joseph Lory; lost several times; was even deported to Mauritius; but never gave up. *Furcy* is his story.
