When the beautiful queen of the Blue Kingdom dies, the king (Jean Marais) vows that he will not marry anyone less handsome than her; the only one who qualifies is his daughter (Catherine Deneuve). To escape this marriage, she flees to another kingdom, cloaked in the magical hide of a donkey. *Peau d’âne* is one of the lesser-known fairy tales by Charles Perrault, the 17th-century author of *Tales of Mother Goose*. Director Demy (Les Parapluies de Cherbourg) made films full of imagination and spectacle as part of the Nouvelle Vague. His *Peau d’âne* became a beautiful and colorful fairy-tale musical, featuring a dual role for a singing Deneuve as both the queen and her daughter.
