Chernov, photographer Evgeniy Maloletka and field producer Vasilisa Stepanenko were the last journalists still in the city of Mariupol as Russian troops approached. They captured some of the most defining images of the war, dying children, mass graves, the bombing of a maternity hospital and more.
Filmed materials were periodically sent to the editors from the only place in Mariupol where still where an online connection - under the stairs at the crushed supermarket - thus it was possible to transfer ten percent of the filmed material. The rest of the material, particularly 30 hours of Chernov's video, was extracted from Mariupol by the Associated Press team through the humanitarian corridor on March 15, 2022.
