With the arrival of the new millennium, the president of a major Milanese real estate company presents an ambitious project: building a luxury resort right on the beach. Land acquisitions began in 2000. The local community, drawn by the prospect of tourism and jobs, sold their land almost unanimously. The only one who refused to sell was Efisio, a shepherd and the owner of the house located right in the targeted area.

For generations, his family has let their cows graze on the idyllic beaches. Efisio refuses to sell his land and stands his ground despite his neighbors’ frantic pleas and the enormous sums of money offered to him. The shepherd and his daughter Francesca come under increasing pressure, and the developers try to force the sale using underhanded tactics. Efisio stubbornly holds his ground, and Francesca slowly begins to understand his defiance.

Riccardo Milani’s film, based on true events, is set against a stunning landscape and is a warm, funny, and ultimately quite poignant David and Goliath story with wonderful performances, especially from amateur actor Loi (a real shepherd) as the unlikely hero. An underdog story about things that money can’t buy.
