Dear Reader,
Friday evening may 15 may 2026 from 20:00 to 22:00 Jo Zender
(ESA Noordwijk ) will give a lecture:
" The solar eclipse on order: The mission of PROBA-3"
The lecture is at Het Groene Huis in Amersfoort and is organized by Sterrenwacht Midden-Nederland.
The speaker Joe Zender is working at ESA in Noordwijk and is working on the groundbreaking PROBA-3 mission. In his lecture he will show how this scientifically exceptional mission comes about - from the preparations to the execution.
About the lecture:
Proba-3 is an ESA technology demonstration mission consisting of two satellites flying in formation with millimeter accuracy. This precise formation flight allows one satellite (the occulter) to cover the Sun, while the other (the coronagraph) observes the inner corona of the Sun ongehinderd . In doing so, Proba-3 creates artificial solar eclipses in space - something never before done in orbit.

About the lecture:
Proba-3 is an ESA technology demonstration mission consisting of two satellites flying in formation with millimeter accuracy. This precise formation flight allows one satellite (the occulter) to cover the Sun, while the other (the coronagraph) observes the Sun's inner corona ongehinderd . In doing so, Proba-3 creates artificial solar eclipses in space - something never before done in orbit.
The mission started after launch in December 2024 and has since performed more than 50 artificial eclipses. The data collected fills an important observational gap between observations of the solar disk and those of the outer corona.
Proba-3 supports science on such topics as the structure and dynamics of the solar corona, the origin of the slow solar wind, and coronal mass emissions (CMEs), especially toward the minimum of solar cycle 25.
In addition, Proba-3 demonstrates new technologies for future multi-satellite missions, including laser and visual metrology, highly stable flight software and innovative sensor techniques.
