In the small town of Mariinka in eastern Ukraine, the film follows several young Ukrainians whose lives have been forever shaped by more than a decade of war and conflict in the Donbas.

Natasha, a promising boxing talent, becomes a military medic. Angela, who lost her parents at a young age, holds her own by smuggling goods along both sides of the front. Meanwhile, brothers Mark and Ruslan get caught up in a Greek tragedy: they are diametrically opposed, on both sides of the conflict. Their youngest brother Daniil follows the war at a distance from the safety of his adoptive family in the United States. Through letters, video conversations and charged silences, a gripping story unfolds about connection, national loyalty and the fault lines where political conflict splits even family ties.

Filmed over a ten-year period on 16mm, Mariinka begins long before the world witnessed the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, after which the city was almost completely destroyed. It is Pieter-Jan De Pue's long-awaited second feature film, following his award-winning debut at the Sundance Film Festival, The Land of the Enlightened.
