From the townships of South Africa to Amersfoort. This summer, the Rietveldpaviljoen brings worlds together in the exhibition “From Township to Amersfoort.”

Eleven South African artists, many of whom have their roots in the townships, engage in a unique dialogue with the serene sculptures of Amersfoort-based sculptor Emile van der Kruk. The experiences, stories, and contrasts of life in and around the townships serve as a major source of inspiration for their work. Daily life—with all its challenges, beauty, and resilience—is powerfully translated into visual art through paintings, sculptures, photography, textile works, and other art forms.

Encountering the work of Emile van der Kruk reveals surprising connections. Contrasts such as rich and poor, romance and reality, young and old, exuberance and tranquility come together in an exhibition that invites visitors to see the world through a different lens.

In addition, several artists drew inspiration from Amersfoort itself specifically for this exhibition, ensuring that the city also plays a role in the exhibition’s narrative.

“From Township to Amersfoort” is an exhibition full of stories, perspectives, and encounters. It’s a unique journey between two worlds, showing that the distance between Cape Town and Amersfoort is sometimes shorter than you might think.
