In Oslo, 17-year-old Johanne is not satisfied with her life. She lives with her single mother Kristin and her grandmother Karin (Anne Marit Jacobsen) lives nearby. Johanne, however, sees her world change with the arrival of the charismatic new French teacher. What begins as a teenage infatuation soon escalates into an all-consuming obsession, leaving Johanne deeply saddened when her affection is not reciprocated.

Johanne starts taking notes of her intense infatuation with her French teacher. Both Johanne's mother and her grandmother get to see these personal texts. Both women are shocked by what they read, but at the same time are impressed by Johanne's writing talent. As the two older women look back on their own first loves and missed opportunities in their love lives in response to these intimate notes, the question remains as to what exactly happened between Johanne and her teacher. The three women each have their own experiences and opinions about desire, freedom, empowerment and responsibility, which are not fixed and sometimes contradict each other.
