Maria Angeles (Carmen Maura) is a 74-year-old woman who belongs to Tangier's Spanish community. She enjoys her life in the colorful Moroccan coastal city; the daily routines with street vendors-she knows everyone there by their first names-and enjoys listening to her favorite music at home on the record player she cherishes.
This life comes to an abrupt end when her daughter decides to sell her house. Maria is forced to move against her will. She doesn't leave it at that, however, and devises a cunning plan. She leaves, not for the airport, but back to her house, which is empty but not yet sold. She squats it. With the help of merchant Abslaine, she buys back all her furniture piece by piece and resumes her old life. Unfortunately, the record player is sold, but retrieving it becomes an adventure in itself. While trying to get her home and possessions back, she unexpectedly rediscovers love with renewed zest for life.
