Take a look in advance

The town of Sollerod is plagued by a motley group of newcomers. They talk strangely and behave as abnormally as possible - moreover, they pretend to be mentally handicapped. All this is to elicit a reaction in people, be it pity, disgust or anger. Leader of the group is the arrogant Stoffer. He wants to get his way and seems to go overboard. When the project escalates, he demands without compassion that his group return to everyday life - only to act like idiots there, too.

The Idiots is not so much about the mentally handicapped as it is about the reaction of people around them. The social status of the mentally disabled is denounced several times, and we see how uncomfortable people feel in their company. That this is confrontational is something director Lars Von Trier understood very well, and he does nothing to cover it up.

The Idiots received a lot of criticism upon its original release. This was mainly directed at the pornographic scenes and other nudity in the film, but many found the fact that a group of people pose as mentally handicapped offensive and insulting. The film was shot according to the rules of Dogma 95: no make up, no artificial lighting and no built sets. Consequently, it feels more like a documentary, or even a real-life soap opera, than a movie. You really start to doubt whether it is not secretly true after all.
