Three generations of exceptional Dutch musicians meet in a common urge to improvise, in which aesthetics, poetry and interplay play an important role. Under The Surface is a Dutch band formed by drummer Joost Lijbaart (1967), guitarist Bram Stadhouders (1987) and vocalist Sanne Rambags (1994). Their debut album, released in 2017 by Challenge Records, was nominated for an Edison.

Under The Surface's improvisations are anything but abstract and sound like carefully composed pieces; Rambags' voice rhymes, whispers and sings over Stadhouders' melodies and Lijbaart's sophisticated percussion. The universal language of music has brought the group to major festivals around the world, from Africa and South America to Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Under The Surface's fully improvised concerts remain a special experience for both the band and the audience. This unique experience has been beautifully captured on their live album Trinity, released in 2019.
