Every year on Oct. 11, the transported prisoners of Kamp Amersfoort are remembered with a silent march.

Transports

For many prisoners, Kamp Amersfoort was not the end of their suffering. More than three-quarters of the prisoners were taken on some 800 transports to 177 other locations. The threat of such a transport was a constant source of fear and uncertainty. The largest transport took place on Oct. 11, 1944, when 1,438 men were transported to Neuengamme concentration camp. Many already knew what awaited them, and this camp near Hamburg was notorious among inmates. Only 18% of this transport would survive the war.

Silent march

To commemorate the victims of this and other transports from Kamp Amersfoort, each year we walk the route the prisoners took at the time. During this walk, we reflect on our current freedoms and realize how valuable, but also how fragile freedom is.
