Take a look in advance
The overwhelming mountain valleys of the Alps provide the backdrop for a heartbreaking drama about an Austrian farmer who refuses to surrender to the authority of Nazi Germany. The new film by American master filmmaker Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life) is based on the life of Franz Jägerstätter, who was convicted for his silent resistance to the German Anschluss.
For the screenplay, Malick drew on the letters Jägerstätter wrote to his wife. While he himself languishes in prison, she is cast out of community by her fellow villagers. With A Hidden Life, Malick explores how the Jägerstätters found the strength to sacrifice their lives and well-being for a higher ideal. As in his earlier work, he lyrically depicts the rich inner worlds of his characters with moving images, a rich soundtrack and associative editing.
