ALETTA the musical is a lively show with new music, accompanied by an all female band. Entertainment and content meet in this highly topical story about one of the most important figures in Dutch history. Aletta Jacobs.
Aletta Jacobs
The life of Aletta (1854-1929) can rightly be called sensational. She studied medicine at a time when university was forbidden territory for women. The first female doctor in the Netherlands, she stood up for working-class women and advocated contraception. She married a progressive politician and lost their only child in childbirth. Aletta was received into the White House as a frontwoman of the international women's movement. She became a leading voice in the emancipation struggle and became the driving force behind women's suffrage in the Netherlands.
