Fifteen-year-old American ballerina Joy Womack (Talia Ryder) is admitted to the prestigious Bolshoi Academy in Moscow. Womack must and will become Prima Ballerina with the Bolshoi ballet. Her great rival is a Russian girl, Natasha Osipova, who has the same ambition. The students train under the direction of Tatiyana Volkova (Diane Kruger), who is strict and demanding. Joika is based on Joy Womack's life story. Director James Napier Robertson met her in America and was blown over by her and her story. Joy was immediately placed in the school's Russian classes, and not in the foreign program, which is unusual for an international student. Says Robertson, "It was really about trying to figure out who you are, and whether that's worth pursuing, and how far you have to go before you tip over into it and become a dark obsession. Before it turns from a quest for something beautiful, to a quest of self-destruction."
