Amersfoort is bursting with the best activities and special places: from hip coffee shops and atmospheric boutiques to cozy drinks by the water and inspiring museums. But you can also give your Instagram feed an upgrade here for free! These six iconic spots offer the perfect backdrop for your best shots. Time to get out there and make that feed shine!

Koppelpoort

The Koppelpoort is probably the most photographed spot in Amersfoort - and for good reason! As soon as dusk falls, the old city gate is beautifully illuminated. The gate, built between 1380 and 1425, is the only one in the Netherlands that provided access to the city by both land and water. During the last restoration in 1996, care was taken to preserve the original materials and historical details.

Eemhuis

The Eemhuis is the cultural center of the Eemplein. What immediately stands out about the modern building are the aluminum spheres. These refer to the shield of Saint George, the patron saint of Amersfoort. The Eemplein is located on the atmospheric Eemhaven where modern architecture meets the glistening water. Here you can enjoy lively terraces, passing ships and the relaxed atmosphere of cheerful people around you.

De Nieuwe Stad

De Nieuwe Stad is a creative area northwest of Amersfoort's old city center. With a mix of start-ups, creative entrepreneurs, catering establishments and educational institutions, it is a city within a city. One of the buildings still bears the logo of the former Prodent Factory, a lasting reminder of the area's industrial past.

Photo tip: In the middle of the Oliemolenhof shines the artwork, or rather lighting design, "Wishful thinking, wishful doing" by Tjeerd Veenhoven.

Wagenwerkplaats

The Wagenwerkplaats, next to the railroad tracks west of the city center, used to be a site for the maintenance of freight cars. Now it is a lively hotspot with creative businesses, hospitality and entertainment, housed in historic, industrial buildings. Besides taking cool photos, for a unique experience you can visit The VR-Room. Here you and friends play a virtual reality escape room and step into a completely different world.

Muurhuizen

The street De Muurhuizen seems straight out of a painting, with its atmospheric facades, colorful shutters and lush facade gardens. What makes this street extra special is that the houses were built with stones from the old city wall. When Amersfoort expanded in 1380, a new city wall was erected and the old one demolished. From 1500 on, houses were built here, so the history of the city is still visible in the street.

Onze Lieve Vrouwekerkhof

Combining historical charm and lively terraces, Onze Lieve Vrouwekerkhof is without a doubt one of the coziest squares. Relax on one of the terraces and enjoy a refreshing cocktail or locally brewed beer. Of course with a view of the photogenic Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren. The tower was completed around 1500 and is the centerpiece of the Netherlands.
